The list of different body parts for a car

Mechanics for beginners

Mechanics for beginners is the name of our new series of articles for neophyte mechanics!

Even if you do not have the ambition to repair your car yourself, it is important to know how to identify the parts of your vehicle. This will prevent you from being fooled by a dishonest mechanic, but also to properly explain by phone to a potential professional the origin of your breakdown.

Today, focus on the body parts of a vehicle: what are they, where are they located and what are they used for?

The body parts at the front of a vehicle

hood

The hood is one of the largest body parts. And for good reason, since it covers the entire vehicle’s engine system. It allows to protect very important parts like the engine obviously, but also parts that are not necessarily thought of as the alternator or the transmission.

The hood is an extremely manipulated part since it is by lifting it that you will be able to supply engine oil or even windshield washer fluid.

front bumper

The front bumper, like the rear bumper, exists mainly to protect motorists in case of a collision. It is often deteriorated during an accident, but it’s wiser. It also protects some important components of your vehicle: the engine that takes up a lot of space, as well as the radiator.

You will eventually handle it for a complete cleaning of your vehicle, or to change the bulbs of your front lights (not mandatory for all cars).

The bumper reinforcement

The bumper reinforcement is neither mandatory nor present on all vehicles. That said, it also allows to further improve the aerodynamics, already propelled by the bumper. This gives you greater flexibility in your driving, and of course, the optimization of your fuel consumption.

the front grill

The radiator grille is the sacred protector of your radiator! This ensures good air circulation in your vehicle without risking direct contact between your radiator and the outside. It has become customary to see the brand logo of your car directly on the grille.

tailgate

The tailgate constitutes the fifth door of your vehicle (hence the name '3-door car' or '5-door car'). He covers the trunk and gets up. In the case of vans, a tailgate is no longer called as such, and uses the term door; since it will open using the vertical sides of the car.

rear bumper

Like its front equivalent, the rear bumper will probably save your life if you have an accident. Even if its appearance differs according to the vehicle you own, it remains mandatory on all: without this body part, you risk a fine for plate defect.

Same as for the front bumper, you will use it when cleaning your car, or to possibly change the bulbs that are hidden behind it.

The rear bumper reinforcement

As its name suggests, the rear bumper reinforcement will enhance the protection provided by the bumper, and thus further reduce the impact in case of a collision. We advise you to have some on your car if you want to optimize your road safety as much as possible!

Also called side skirt, the rocker panel is located on the lower part of your car. Like reinforcements or spoilers, it will play an important role in the aerodynamics of the vehicle by allowing as little air as possible to pass under the vehicle.
