Mirror of a car: your legal obligations
According to article R 316-6 of the highway code, it is mandatory for all vehicles (excluding agricultural machines and motorized personal mobility devices) to be " equipped with one or more devices for indirect vision, so arranged as to enable the driver to monitor the road towards the rear of the vehicle from his seat ".

The types of vehicles and their mandatory mirrors

So-called classic cars, whether urban or saloon, must necessarily have a left and central interior mirror. This means that the right mirror is not mandatory, although it is recommended.
Commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles
Commercial vehicles, such as vans and station wagons, must be equipped with two exterior mirrors. For heavy goods vehicles, these two corner mirrors must also be accompanied by a blind spot mirror.
Why is it mandatory to drive with certain mirrors?
The left and central mirrors
On a 'light' vehicle, that is to say for the majority of motorists, the left rear-view mirror will be essential in France for passing. The central mirror, on the other hand, will be essential to correctly measure your distances with the cars in the back. This will be useful in particular for braking intensely.
Attention, the right rear-view mirror remains important on one hand for driving comfort, but also if you want to fold down when overtaking, or take an exit.
Commercial vehicles and heavy goods vehicles
Why is the right-hand mirror mandatory for heavy goods vehicles and commercial vehicles? Simply because the central mirror is often non-existent or difficult to use in this type of machine. You will therefore need to be equipped with the two external mirrors.
