Driving with a noisy exhaust: what does the law say?

Noise pollution is the cause of several physical and physiological disturbances, particularly in terms of hearing and sleep. For several years, the government has been more specific about acceptable noise levels. It’s not new, transportation is very noisy, whether it’s cars, motorcycles, buses or even the train. Forced to live with it, French cities are increasingly favorable to the energy transition which has several advantages including the reduction of urban noise.

The penalties for a noisy exhaust pipe

The police are clear: if you make too much noise with your car, you risk a flat fine of €68. In some cases, it is also possible that your vehicle is immobilized.

However, some love this noise so characteristic of the engine in full power and continue to make tuning modifications to their exhaust pipe. Is the sanction the same in this case?

Make your exhaust pipe noisier: tuning has its limits

Replace its silencer, change its turbo, add a tip at the end, or even a rubber sock... Here is the non-exhaustive list of tips to further increase the noise of its exhaust pipe. Unfortunately, many people forget the legal obligations in terms of noise pollution in urban areas. Our citizens can quickly find themselves having to live in a perpetual hubbub, between noisy cars, works and sites, not to mention the neighborhood.

The government is punishing these road behaviors by further penalizing motorists who have voluntarily modified the muffler of their exhaust pipe, or even removed it: in this case, the fine is considered 4th class and increased from €68 to €135. For people whose car exceeds 83 decibels, same story: the penalty amounts to €135.

For your information, a concert is between 80 and 100 decibels...

Enough to think twice before wanting to make his exhaust more noisy! Despite everything, unfortunately there are drivers forced to deal with too much exhaust noise, without wanting this unpleasant sound. How to do it?

Identify the source of your exhaust noise

Before accusing your exhaust pipe, remember that it is only the end of an entire exhaust system composed of several elements. Noise can therefore have another source; in this situation, pay attention to the type of noise nuisance that comes out of your exhaust pipe.

I hear a whistling

Generally, a whistling exhaust pipe means that a leak is present. In the majority of cases, this comes from an exhaust gas or air leak. The pressure caused by the expulsion of gases or air creates this whistling. We advise you to check (or ask your mechanic) that all the elements of the exhaust system are present, sealed together and tightly secured.

If your vehicle has traces of rust, or has recently undergone an abnormal shock, it is possible that this may cause a hissing. In this case, directly consult a mechanic who will be able to detect the rust or the consequences of the shock.

I hear a 'click'

In some situations, having an exhaust pipe that clicks often precedes the whistling. The causes can therefore be the same.

When you notice that your muffler slams in neutral, cornering or on hills, the best thing is to consult a professional.

I feel abnormal vibrations

There is a good chance that it comes from the engine, in which case we advise you to quickly contact a mechanic.

This can also be caused by a leak directly at the exhaust pipe. Check that it is not covered with oil.

In general, strong vibrations at these places rarely announce good news. If you do not have in-depth mechanical skills, do not take the risk of performing a false self-diagnosis.

No doubt, my exhaust pipe is drilled

If you have observed that your exhaust pipe is well drilled, and there is no longer any doubt (in general, a drilled exhaust pipe can be easily seen with the naked eye), it is high time to replace it.

In the meantime, there are still temporary solutions like filling the hole with adhesive tape, but it will only last for a while. Replacing your exhaust remains essential.

Replace your noisy exhaust pipe: the solutions

Request a quote from your mechanic

The most common when your exhaust pipe needs to be replaced is to go directly ask for a quote from your mechanic. The latter will include the cost of the part as well as that of the labor. You can quickly end up with exorbitant repair costs.

Did you know? Since 2016, your mechanic has been obliged to offer you two quotes: one for new parts, and one for used ones. A quote for recycled auto parts will allow you to significantly reduce the bill. Do not hesitate to remind him of this duty!

Order your used exhaust pipe

If you know about mechanics, why not buy your own used exhaust pipe? It’s MUCH cheaper and more ecological.
